Domestic Violence Awareness

Domestic Violence Awareness
I explore the full spectrum of domestic violence, debunking the myth that it’s only about physical harm. I spoke with experts to highlight how emotional, financial, and psychological abuse can be just as controlling and dangerous, especially when they go unrecognized.
In this article, I explore the wide-ranging and often overlooked realities of domestic violence—going far beyond the common misconception that it only involves physical abuse. This was one of the most meaningful pieces I’ve worked on, as it allowed me to unpack how emotional, psychological, financial, and sexual abuse can be just as damaging and controlling.
Through interviews with clinical experts, therapists, and social workers, I examined the subtle and often invisible signs of abuse that can be difficult for victims and survivors — and their loved ones — to recognize. I covered complex topics like gaslighting, love bombing, the fawn response, and cycles of reconciliation that often keep people trapped in abusive relationships. I also addressed the systemic risks that make certain groups — especially women of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, and undocumented immigrants — more vulnerable to abuse.
Ultimately, my goal was to raise awareness, provide resources, and affirm that abuse is never the victim or survivor's fault. This piece served as both a practical guide and a compassionate reminder that support is available and recovery is possible.
