I first met Reiki Master Angela Nicole Maris in 2016 when her energy healing services were offered as a work perk.
Angela Nicole is surrounded by a magnetic light and beaming with a positive energy, but even still, I was at first a little skeptical. It wasn't until toward the end of our first session when she told me she could feel the recent loss I'd experienced that I felt the potential of this kind of traditional healing method.
Months later, you can find Angela Nicole spending several hours conducting Reiki on me from her home office. I am noticeably 'lighter' upon leaving, seemingly floating up the street while smiling.
Now, as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to break daily records, Angela Nicole has had to adapt her business to meeting the needs of her clients while respecting social distancing. When I learned of this, I had to reach out and ask her to explain for us how energy healing works when done by distance.
Reiki Master Angela Nicole Maris says the pandemic’s limitations are helping expand opportunities for distance energy healing.
But are remote sessions as effective as in-person connections?
“The benefits of an in-person session and a distance session are no different*,” says Maris.
“When you open to the Reiki energy and allow it to flow into all aspects of your physical body, it is like that energy resonates into your daily life and relationship dynamics as well,” she says.
“The goals and intentions you are working towards in life tend to work out in seemingly magical ways, but really, there is a stronger sense of clarity with yourself and life and a motivation pushing you towards what's best.”
“Paths seem to clear to get you to where you desire at a quicker rate. I like to say that's the Universe working its magic in cases where it feels like this—and it really is!”
“The goals and intentions you are working towards in life tend to work out in seemingly magical ways, but really, there is a stronger sense of clarity with yourself and life and a motivation pushing you towards what's best," says Maris.
Maris adds that for people who would otherwise find it challenging to leave their home, this has created a space of new potential for healing.
And there are so many factors that could influence a person not being able to leave their home, she says.
For example, persons with limited mobility, immune system vulnerabilities, and chronic pain, can all experience challenges in attending in-person sessions for every treatment they’re undergoing. When you have a general practitioner, a counsellor, an energy healer, a pharmacist, etc. these health-related appointments add up to a lot of moving around.
Now there’s another option.
“I love that Reiki and healing energy knows no bounds for myself anymore, and I can continue to help others in this new way!”
Reiki 101 - Is this for Real?
If you’re new to Reiki, the simplest explanation is that it’s the Japanese practice of healing and unblocking energy.
It’s been around for thousands of years. The International Center for Reiki Training (ICRT) says the technique is conducted by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen life force energy flows through us—and is what causes us to be alive.
Rei-ki = Japanese words “rei” (universal) and “ki” (life energy).
Maris says the beauty of energy healing is that everyone has their own unique goals, intentions and aspirations in life—and also their own personal healing journey from past experiences—so no two sessions are really ever the same.
“The most common side effects are a state of total relaxation and sense of alignment within. There is a really beautiful harmony that resonates when present and aligned within,” she says.
“There is a stronger connection to your inner being, tension in the body is released, and sleep feels more productive and restful as well.”
Maris shares the benefits of Reiki
Stronger connection to inner being
Reduced body tension
Maris says happiness, joy, balance, relief, euphoric energy, acceptance of life situations, and the knowingness of how to move forward with confidence and clarity are just *some* of the benefits one can experience from in-person and distance reiki.
Reiki isn’t something people study from a book or video or lecture. It is an intensely personal exchange between master and student that enables the student to access an unlimited supply of life force energy.
The ICRT explains, “This ability is passed on during an ‘attunement’ given by a Reiki master and allows the student to tap into an unlimited supply of ‘life force energy’ to improve one's health and enhance the quality of life.”
Maris was attuned in 2012.
“I've been offering group distance sessions since 2014, but it was the ‘limits’ that this pandemic was creating that helped me to expand and open to all possibilities in energy healing and in my practice,” she says.
Preparing for a distance session
The below are general tips for preparing for a productive and empowering Reiki session.
Drink plenty of water before and after
Exercise love and compassion
Be extremely gentle on yourself emotionally and mentally because there will be old emotions or experiences that resurface to look at in a different light and the opportunity to heal on a deeper level
Get plenty of rest
Listen to your needs
“Practicing self-awareness is so important, not only for the relationship with yourself, but those you are connected to as well in life,” she says.
“In a way, adversity has always helped to better my world and become stronger, and this has been no different. Once I was able to get past my limiting beliefs and insecurities, I could feel the calling and urge to do it.”
Adapting to pandemic protocols
Maris is one of those people who looks at adversity as opportunity.
She says, “In this pandemic, I have been inspired to love myself and others in a newer, stronger light."
"It has also helped me to expand into experimenting with distance sessions on a one-on-one level, which is something I always wanted to offer, but was limiting myself with certain ideas and beliefs," she says.
"The group distance sessions are great, but I really enjoy the intimacy in working one-on-one with another person, experiencing that trust, openness, insight, and providing that support on a deeper level."
*Due to COVID-19, distance sessions are the guaranteed safest way of delivery of Reiki.
